The tinnitus hum of traffic rushes in the early morning air punctuated by the blackbird’s staccato dawn chirrup as it feeds on the fuchsia berries in the front garden. The high-pitched whine of engines in high gear accelerates & shifts for the long run ahead. The sound belies a constant pressure to keep doing. It is the hum of a rushing herd in a race to get to who knows where.

I have not written in the last few days. The frenetic pressure to sort things after my three day sleep, cut me off from just being in the moment. Old thoughts chastised with “I’ve not got time for that”. Writing is a luxury, an indulgence I cannot afford.

This house used to have the peace of the other place but that was fifty years ago. A small herd of golden doe-eyed Jersey cows grazed in the field at the bottom of the garden. You’d hear them rip & chew swathes of clover rich grass. It did not have to be defined as organic as that was how things were done then; symbiotically in synch with nature.

The cows’ demeanour calmed the need to do. They’d welcome us by the fence with keenly inquisitive nudging. In winter, great swirls of steamy breath huffed & sniffed to see if we were like their farmer. Their big dark eyes & ridiculously long eye-lashes could rival any Disney cuteness. Long wet raspy tongues would reach out to lick us into giggles.

Twice a day, the farmer walked with them to the dairy just a few hundred yards down the lane. Each morning bottles of their liquid gold appeared outside our front door. Each day the blue-tits pecked holes in the foil lids to get to the thick cream that would go all the way down to the bottom of the bottle to where just an inch of milk would lie.

Today, the cows are gone, the farm castrated by progress. Its history is cut off from us by the constant thrum of the dual carriageway that never sleeps.

Our hearts crave what was; a sense of connection in a place where the peaceful pace of natural living beats out the rhythm of respite, care & belonging.
